§ 8 Emergency plan, staff instruction and training
Open in the coursewith narrated slides, a checklist to tick off and a quiz
At a glance
- Three duties. A written emergency plan, a team instructed on it with proof, and emergency training at least every two years.
- The written plan. It records the arrangements your practice has made and explains them.
- The procedure in an emergency. Recognise and position · call the emergency doctor if needed · start resuscitation at once in cardiac arrest · first aid until help arrives.
- Instruct the team. Every member of staff, with proof: who, when, and on which version of the plan.
- Train every two years. Together with the team, with a practical part, documented at the practice.
In detail
What § 8 requires
§ 8 has four subsections, and each is a duty of its own:
- A written emergency plan that records and explains the arrangements made § 8(1).
- A set procedure that secures the best first care until the emergency doctor arrives: recognise the emergency and position the patient; call the emergency medical service if needed; in cardiac arrest, start resuscitation at once; give the first aid that is urgently needed. Whether to call the emergency doctor is the doctor's decision in each case § 8(2).
- An instructed team: all staff are instructed on the emergency plan, with proof § 8(3).
- Recurring emergency training at least every two years, together with the staff, with a practical part. Its documentation stays at the practice § 8(4).
What counts as proof
- the emergency plan itself, dated, so it's clear which version applies;
- a list of instructions given: who, when, by whom, on which version of the plan;
- the training record: date, participants, content and the practical part.
On an on-site visit, the peers can see these records § 33(7).
Common gaps
- New staff haven't been instructed because they joined after the last instruction.
- The last training was more than two years ago.
- The training was a talk with no practical part.
- There is no list of participants.
