§ 16 Device training, staff education and delegation
Open in the coursewith narrated slides, a checklist to tick off and a quiz
At a glance
- Device training. Whoever operates a device is trained in its correct use, with proof.
- Support staff education. The practice supports its staff in their further training.
- Delegation within limits. For non-medical health professionals, junior doctors in training and medical students on placement: orders, guidance and supervision, and the professional limits of delegation.
In detail
Devices
Staff who operate devices are trained in their correct use, with proof § 16(1). For reprocessing particular medical devices, the Hygiene Regulation also requires instruction to be documented Hygiene-V § 11(2). Which devices the practice has is in the device register from lesson 7.4.
Staff education
Staff are supported in their further training § 16(6). The QS-VO doesn't say how; time off, paying fees or pointing to suitable courses are all options.
Delegation
If you deploy members of non-medical health professions, junior doctors in training (Turnusärzte) or medical students on placement (Famulanten), observe the orders, guidance and supervision each requires, and the professional limits of delegation § 16(7). Where those limits lie is set by each group's professional law, not by the QS-VO.
What works as proof
- a list per device: who has been trained, when and by whom;
- attendance confirmations from staff training;
- a written rule on which tasks are delegated to whom, and who orders, guides and supervises.
Checklist
- For each device it's recorded who has been trained on it, when and by whom.
- Instruction in reprocessing medical devices is documented.
- Staff are supported in further training.
- Delegated tasks stay within professional limits, with orders, guidance and supervision.
Quiz
Who must be trained, with proof, under § 16(1)?
- Only the doctor
- Only staff in their first year
- All staff who operate devices, in their correct use
- Nobody; the device manual is enough
Show the answer
The answer is C: All staff who operate devices, in their correct use. § 16(1): whoever operates devices is trained in their correct use, with proof. The manual must be on hand as well (§ 13(2)).
